How to Send Ethereum from Coinbase to MetaMask

Step-by-step guide to transferring ETH from Coinbase to MetaMask, including network selection, gas fees, and common pitfalls.

Sending ETH from Coinbase to MetaMask is the first step for accessing DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and decentralized apps. The transfer itself is straightforward, but choosing the wrong network can send your funds somewhere unexpected.

Before You Start

  • A Coinbase account with ETH balance (keep at least $5-10 extra to cover fees)
  • MetaMask wallet installed (browser extension or mobile app) with your recovery phrase backed up
  • Know which network you need: Ethereum mainnet for most DeFi, or a Layer 2 like Base for lower fees
If you plan to use a Layer 2 network (Base, Arbitrum, Optimism), add it to MetaMask first via chainlist.org. Your MetaMask address is the same across all EVM networks, but you must be viewing the correct network to see your balance.

How to Send ETH from Coinbase to MetaMask

  1. Open MetaMask and copy your address. Click the MetaMask extension icon (or open the app), verify you are on the correct network, and click your account name to copy the address. It starts with 0x and is 42 characters long.
  2. Verify the copied address. Paste it into a notes app and confirm the first and last six characters match what MetaMask shows. This catches clipboard malware.
  3. Log into Coinbase and select Ethereum. Find ETH in your asset list and click "Send."
  4. Paste your MetaMask address. Enter it in the recipient field. On mobile, scan the MetaMask QR code instead.
  5. Choose the network. Coinbase offers Ethereum mainnet, Base (free from Coinbase), Arbitrum, and Optimism. Select the network that matches your MetaMask setup. If unsure, use Ethereum mainnet.
  6. Enter the amount. Leave some ETH in Coinbase if you plan to use it later. For your first transfer, send a small test amount ($10-20).
  7. Review fees and confirm. Check the network fee displayed by Coinbase. Complete 2FA if prompted and send.
  8. Confirm receipt in MetaMask. Switch MetaMask to the network you selected on Coinbase. Your ETH should appear within 1-15 minutes depending on the network.

Fees and Timing

NetworkFeeSpeed
Ethereum mainnet$0.50-$52-15 min
BaseFree from CoinbaseUnder 1 min
Arbitrum$0.01-$0.051-5 min
Optimism$0.01-$0.051-5 min

Base is the cheapest option for Coinbase users: free and nearly instant. Ethereum mainnet costs more but has the widest compatibility with DeFi protocols. During high congestion (NFT drops, market volatility), mainnet fees can spike above $10.

FAQ

What if my ETH doesn't appear in MetaMask?

Check that MetaMask is set to the same network you selected on Coinbase. If you sent on Base but MetaMask shows Ethereum mainnet, switch networks using the dropdown at the top. Your ETH is there: you are just viewing the wrong network.

Do I need ETH in MetaMask before receiving?

No. You do not need ETH to receive ETH. However, you will need ETH (or the native gas token for your network) to send transactions later. Plan to keep a small balance for gas.

Can I send ETH from Coinbase to MetaMask on Solana?

No. MetaMask only supports EVM-compatible networks (Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon). To use Solana, you need a Solana-compatible wallet like Phantom.
