Security Architecture

Both wallets use EAL6+ certified secure element chips for key storage, but they take opposite approaches to firmware transparency. Trezor publishes its entire firmware and hardware schematics as open source, allowing anyone to audit the code that protects their funds. Note: Tangem operates as an air-gapped signing device since it has no USB or Bluetooth connectivity. The only data channel is NFC, which requires physical proximity of a few centimeters. Trezor Safe 3 and Safe 5 require a USB cable, while the Safe 7 adds optional Bluetooth with a physical kill switch.

Seed Phrase vs Seedless Recovery

The most significant philosophical difference between Tangem and Trezor is how they handle backup and recovery. Trezor follows the standard seed phrase model: during setup, the device generates a BIP-39 mnemonic (12 or 24 words) that the user writes down and stores securely. Trezor also supports Shamir Backup (SLIP-39), which splits the seed into multiple shares (for example, 3-of-5) so that no single share can reconstruct the wallet.

Tangem takes a seedless approach by default. The private key is generated directly on the secure element during initial setup and never leaves the chip. Instead of writing down a seed phrase, users create backup copies by linking additional NFC cards during the setup process. Each linked card receives an encrypted copy of the signing capability. Users can optionally choose to set up with a traditional seed phrase, but the default and recommended path is seedless.

This design has a critical limitation: backup cards can only be linked during the initial setup. You cannot add a backup card later. Transaction Signing Experience

The signing workflow differs fundamentally between the two devices. With Tangem, the user prepares a transaction in the mobile app, enters their PIN, and taps the card against the phone's NFC reader. The card signs the transaction internally on its secure element and returns only the signed output via NFC. The entire process takes a few seconds and requires no cables or desktop software.

Trezor requires connecting the device via USB-C (or Bluetooth on the Safe 7) to either the Trezor Suite desktop app or a mobile app. The transaction details are displayed on the device's own screen, where the user verifies the recipient address and amount before confirming with a physical button press or touchscreen tap. Known Security Incidents

Neither wallet has suffered a breach of on-device funds, but both have experienced peripheral security issues. In December 2024, a bug in Tangem's mobile app caused seed phrases to be logged in app logs when users activated wallets using an imported seed phrase. These logs could be inadvertently shared with Tangem support. The bug affected less than 0.1% of users and was patched on December 30, 2024. No funds were lost.

Trezor has experienced multiple data breaches through third-party service providers.
